The Benefits of Green Tea Chocolates
Green tea, a beverage commonly consumed in Asian countries, is a significant source of a type of flavonoid called catechins. The green tea catechins include epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epicatechin. EGCG is the most abundant of these catechins, and many healthful benefits, including anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, antiangiogenic, and antiviral activities, have been attributed to EGCG. EGCG may also possess antidiabetic activity. New research shows that the antioxidant, EGCG, binds to a protein found on tumor cells and dramatically slows their growth. (Extracted from Tachibana, H. Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, April 2004; vol 11.)
In a recent report, injection of EGCG into lean and obese laboratory animals significantly lowered blood glucose and insulin levels, and green tea extract increased glucose metabolism in adipocytes. (Extracted from J. Biol. Chem., Vol. 277, Issue 38, 34933-34940, September 20, 2002)
More recent studies have concluded that EGCG kills cancer cells in vitro (in the lab). While there is no guarantee that the same effect takes place in vivo (in the body), many people drink green tea and take green tea pills for its beneficial effects.
One of the best ways to get EGCG into the body is through the buccal mucosa (the lining of your mouth). This reduces the loss of EGCG which occurs in the stomach, liver and kidneys. One method of accomplishing this is to put candy containing EGCG between your cheek and gum and let it be absorbed by the lining of your mouth.
Consuming Green Tea chocolates containing EGCG extract is an excellent way for your body to absorb the flavonoid benefits of Green Tea. As a special note of interest, certain chocolates also possess flavonoid benefits. In recent studies, it has been shown that chocolate contains antioxidants --phenolic compounds, also known as flavonoids -- that possess certain health benefits. Phenolics can help protect against or slow heart disease by preventing fat-like substances (LDL, or low-density lipoproteins) in the bloodstream from oxidizing and forming plaque that can eventually block arteries.
